
THE GALATA TOWER Galata Tower (Galata Kulesi) is one of the oldest towers in the world. It was built of wood in the year 528, by the Byzantine emperor Anastasius Oilosuz, to serve as a lighthouse. In 1348, it was rebuilt by the Genoese to protect the port of the Galata coast, it was, at the time, the tallest construction in Constantinople. In 1960 the tower was opened to the public.
