Things to Do in Istanbul in 2026: A Practical Guide for Algerian Travellers
Do Algerians need a visa for Istanbul in 2026?
It depends on your age. Under presidential decree no. 11456, signed on 19 June 2026 and published the next day in Türkiye’s Official Gazette, Algerian citizens with an ordinary passport who are under 15 or over 50 can enter Türkiye without a visa for tourism or transit, for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. The qualifying age used to be 65.
Travellers aged 15 to 50 still need a visa. According to the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Algerians aged 15–18 or 35–50 who hold a valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or residence permit can apply for a single-entry, one-month e-Visa on evisa.gov.tr. Other travellers in that range must apply through the Turkish embassy or consulate.
Rules change, so check the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs before booking, and make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months on arrival.
What are the must-see sights in Sultanahmet?
Sultanahmet, the historic peninsula, can fill a full day on foot. The essentials:
- Hagia Sophia: the upper gallery costs €25 for foreign visitors (official tariff, September 2026); the box office closes at 19:00.
- Blue Mosque: free to enter, but closed to visitors during prayer times; on Fridays it reopens to visitors from about 14:30. Dress modestly.
- Topkapı Palace: 2,750 TL with the Harem; closed on Tuesdays.
- Süleymaniye Mosque: free, a short walk up from the Spice Bazaar.
- Basilica Cistern: check the current price on the official site, as sources differ.
Prices change often; treat these figures as indicative and book Hagia Sophia and the palaces first, since they are the only ones that sell out. Museums now take cards or an İstanbulkart rather than cash. The major sights and a few quieter museums of the area are listed on Simbads below.

Where can you shop for spices and local products?
The Spice Bazaar (Mısır Çarşısı) in Eminönü is the easiest market to visit: spices, Turkish delight, dried fruit, tea. Compare prices between stalls and ask to taste before buying. The Grand Bazaar is closed on Sundays, so plan it for another day.
What should you see around Galata and Karaköy?
Cross the Galata Bridge and give this side of the Golden Horn an afternoon. The Galata Tower costs €30 for foreign visitors; the museums nearby are a calmer alternative, with art, history and a whirling dervish lodge. The Istanbul Modern and other modern art museums close on Mondays. Finish with a walk along the waterfront in Karaköy.

Which palaces, parks and viewpoints are on the Bosphorus?
Dedicate a half day to the waterfront. Dolmabahçe Palace is the grandest of the Ottoman palaces on the water (about 2,000 TL; closed on Mondays; sources differ, so check millisaraylar.gov.tr). Beylerbeyi Palace on the Asian shore is quieter. For views, take a ferry across the strait, see the Maiden’s Tower from the shore, and walk in Gülhane Park or Yıldız Park. Emirgan Park is busiest at tulip time in spring.

What practical tips should you know before going?
- Payment: museum entrances take cards or İstanbulkart, not cash, since 1 August 2025.
- Passes: the Museum Pass (€105) does not cover Hagia Sophia, the Basilica Cistern or Dolmabahçe Palace, and the Müzekart is for residents only. Do the maths before buying.
- Closing days: Topkapı on Tuesdays, Dolmabahçe on Mondays, the Grand Bazaar on Sundays.
- Mosques: free, but cover shoulders and knees; women should bring a scarf.
- Transport: buy an İstanbulkart for metro, tram, bus and ferries.
Prices and opening hours in this guide come from official tariffs and travel sources checked in September and October 2026; confirm them before you go.
